Bring Sexy Back - How to Create Your Bedroom Sanctuary
It’s 6pm and you just walked through the front door of your house. Your co-workers worked your last nerve, the printer jammed 67 times today, while typing up a report that’s close to a deadline, your computer kept restarting due to “updates”, and you didn’t even get a chance to eat lunch.
Rush hour traffic was the devil and now you have to muster up enough energy to cook dinner for your hungry family who adamantly claim “they’re starving to death”. But that’s ok. You’ve got this…because after all, you’re Superwoman remember?
The light at the end of the tunnel is that after all of the madness in your day, you get to retreat to your glorious master suite and relax! Wait. What glorious master suite? Each night you walk into a blah room that functions as a gym, storage room, office, and hamper.
Alone time with hubby tonight – not happening. This is anything BUT the dreamy sanctuary your bedroom should be.
If you can’t remember the last time you and your spouse participated in any extra-curricular activities together that doesn’t involve a football or your kid’s soccer cleats, well it’s time to bring sexy back! Here’s how you do it.
How to Create Your Bedroom Sanctuary – Tip #1
Declutter! There’s nothing worse than having your sanity and peace robbed from you like walking into an unorganized, dysfunctional, hot mess of a space. Your bedroom should scream ultimate oasis. That can’t happen when you’re unable to see your bed because all of last week’s dirty laundry is piled on top of it (gross).
Remove any extra furniture that doesn’t belong in the space. You shouldn’t have an office area in your bedroom because it’s a place of rest and relaxation…not an office away from the office.
This is also not the place for a make-shift fitness center. Take the treadmill out of the room and do your workouts outside or in a spare area of your home (if you even actually use it). Plus, you’ll see how much more real estate you’ve gained. You may be able to create a cozy sitting area or reading nook.

Choosing the right color for your bedroom is so crucial. It’s a place of peace and tranquility so you want the colors to reflect just that. You may love the color red, but it may not be the best choice for a bedroom. Red evokes energy and power. It’s a very strong color that also stimulates the appetite.
Try to stick with calmer, rest-inducing colors such as grays, blues, greens, and even whites.
If you just can’t part with a bolder color, you can infuse pops of it through accent pillows, artwork, and accessories.
How to Create Your Bedroom Sanctuary – Tip #3
Make your bed luxurious! The bed is typically the focal point of a bedroom so you should put some TLC into it. Invest in comfortable, beautiful bedding - super soft sheets, a duvet, a duvet cover, and extra pillows.
If you want a more luxe look, add a statement headboard. It can be wall-mounted or attached to the bed. A well-chosen headboard speaks to an adult room. I think we’re past our younger days of a lot of wall space above our bed with posters of teen heartthrobs plastered all over it!
How to Create Your Bedroom Sanctuary – Tip #4
Light it up! Ensure you have a good mix of lighting. Layered lighting makes a huge difference in a space. There are generally three types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent.
Ambient lighting is your general source of lighting. This could be your ceiling fan (a lifesaver if you live in a warmer climate) or a gorgeous chandelier. Having just one source of lighting is ineffective and not very flattering.
Task lighting is needed to provide “focused” light to a task like reading a book or writing a letter in bed. You may not need an overhead light, so you can turn on one or both table lamps.
Accent lighting could be a pair of decorative wall sconces or a floor lamp next to a chaise. This type of lighting adds that extra little something to the room. Make sure you have them on dimmers to set the mood!
How to Create Your Bedroom Sanctuary – Tip #5
Add a real plant or two. When you incorporate greenery into your room design, it brings life to it. It creates softness and adds a little bit of nature into your space.
Plants add that finishing touch to a room. Even if you have a black thumb, there are a myriad of indoor plants that you can choose from that don’t need a lot of maintenance. One of my favorites is the snake plant (or mother-in-law’s tongue). It gives a modern feel while not being so needy.
Probably the best benefit of all, plants are a natural air cleanser. They improve indoor air quality by reducing carbon monoxide, increasing humidity, reducing levels of certain pollutants such as benzene and nitrogen oxide, reducing airborne dust levels, and keeping air temperatures down. Who doesn’t want some of that in their life?
Did any of this sound impossible? I’d like to think not. If anything, I hope it has encouraged you to do some revamping of your bedroom space. Having your own personal bedroom sanctuary is so important. We all need our little getaway after those hectic days.
You can create that little slice of heaven by decluttering and organizing your space, choosing the right wall color, making your bed look and feel so luxurious it’s Pin-worthy, add proper lighting, and incorporate some of the outdoors into your indoors.
By following these tips, you can achieve the dream bedroom you’ve always wanted and soooo deserve. You’ll be well on your way to bringing sexy back to your space and you won’t even need trips to the hotels anymore (wink, wink)!
