NKBA Kitchen and Bath Industry Show 2024: An Interior Designer’s Perspective

As an interior designer, attending the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas, Nevada is akin to a child visiting a candy store. This event is not just a showcase; it’s the epicenter of innovation, where the latest trends, technology, and designs in the kitchen and bath industry are unveiled.

This year’s experience at KBIS was nothing short of inspirational, offering a treasure trove of ideas and innovations that are set to redefine interior spaces. Here’s a glimpse into my journey through the show, highlighting the trends, products, and designs that caught my eye.

A Haven for Innovation

Walking through the expansive exhibition space, it was clear that innovation is at the forefront of kitchen and bath design. Manufacturers and designers are pushing boundaries, blending technology with aesthetics to create products that are not only beautiful but smart.

Smart kitchens and baths have evolved from a niche luxury to a widespread trend, with appliances and fixtures that offer enhanced functionality, connectivity, and efficiency. From faucets that activate with a touch or a gesture to smart ovens and laundry appliances that can be controlled via an app on a smartphone, the future of kitchen and bath design is here.

One of the smart products that caught my eye was Kohler’s EIR Smart Toilet which features a heated seat, customizable cleansing, nightlight, hands-free opening/closing, automatic flush, plus a touchscreen remote that includes a massage and seat temperature function! Why would you ever want to get off the toilet?!

Another product I really liked was the GE Cafe Smart Slide-in range. It offers an induction cooktop,  gourmet guided cooking, advanced temperature sensors, and an in-oven camera that allows you to keep an eye on time sensitive dishes while you’re doing something else. A nice bonus was how GE displayed this range in a fun and colorful way!

Miele’s H 7870 BMX handleless compact speed oven was a hit! Among its features are network-enabled wifi and a large touch display with proximity sensor - meaning you can tap or swipe the large display or allow it to respond on approach with its Motion React technology!

Sustainability Takes Center Stage

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword but a crucial element in design, and this was evident at KBIS. Eco-friendly materials, water-efficient fixtures, and energy-saving appliances were prevalent, showcasing the industry’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Products made from recycled or renewable resources, as well as those designed for longevity and minimal environmental impact, were among the highlights, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable living spaces.

I absolutely loved seeing Cosentino’s products, especially their beautiful Silestone collection! What makes it even more attractive is their approach to sustainability. Their HybriQ+ is a new standard for the global industry. This manufacturing process uses 99% reused water, 100% renewable electric energy, zero water waste, and a minimum of 20% recycled raw materials.

Embracing Personalization

Customization and personalization were major themes at the show (which are my favorite aspects of a design project), with an emphasis on creating spaces that reflect the individual’s style and needs.

From customizable cabinet colors and finishes to modular systems that adapt to various spaces and uses, the options for personalization are boundless. This trend is a response to the growing desire for unique, tailor-made spaces that cater to the homeowner’s lifestyle and preferences.

The LG HID Smart Mirror definitely had me geekin’! You can really personalize your bathroom experience! It displays the date, time, and weather all while you’re watching your favorite show as you’re getting ready for the day. You can also have your reminders pop up so you don’t forget that important meeting and so much more!

Luxurious Wellness Spaces

The bathroom is being reimagined as a sanctuary for wellness and relaxation, a trend that was abundantly clear at KBIS. Luxurious bathtubs, spa-like showers, and advanced toilet systems with wellness features like bidet functions and seat warmers were all the rage. This focus on creating a spa-like experience at home aligns with the increasing importance of self-care and wellness in our daily lives.

Kohler takes it again…especially when it comes to a spa-like experience in the bathroom (not surprised at all).

Bold Colors and Textures

While white and neutral tones remain popular in kitchen and bath design, there was a noticeable shift towards bold colors and textures at the show. Finally! I’m so over the all-white-everything trend!

Vibrant hues, dramatic patterns, and tactile materials are being used to add character and depth to spaces. This trend towards boldness allows for more expressive and dynamic designs, offering a counterpoint to minimalist aesthetics.

Kohler continues to showcase their love of color! There’s definitely no shortage of uniqueness when it comes to sinks and bathtubs.

Kraus isn’t afraid of color either. The array of colors for shower systems and sinks certainly stopped me in my tracks!

Ruvati had a “cascade of colors” on display at their booth as well. Your bathroom or kitchen could never be called boring with one of these vibrant sinks.

Some Final Thoughts…

The NKBA Kitchen & Bath Industry Show is more than just an exhibition; it’s a reflection of where the industry is headed, highlighting the themes of innovation, sustainability, personalization, wellness, and bold expression. As an interior designer, attending KBIS is an invaluable experience, providing a wealth of inspiration and insights into the future of kitchen and bath design. I also learn about how products are made and how they function, giving me the ability to properly educate my clients.

The trends and products showcased at this year’s event have left me super excited about the possibilities for transforming spaces into more beautiful, functional, and sustainable environments!

In the world of interior design, staying ahead of trends and embracing innovation is key. The insights gained from KBIS are not just trends to watch but signals of a broader evolution in how we think about and create spaces. It’s an exciting time to be in the field, and I look forward to incorporating these ideas into my projects, and creating spaces that inspire and elevate the everyday lives of my clients.
