3 Steps to Getting Your Dream Space - Hire Professionals
Time to wrap up this series about how to get your dream space y’all! You should now know that before starting any design project, it’s crucial to first understand what your priorities are and have a pretty good grasp on how much you’re willing to invest to get what you want. The final step to this process is hiring the right professionals. Boom. Yes, I said it.
Once you’ve done your due diligence in doing your homework to researching the cost of materials, furnishings, and labor, it’s time to hire the pros. I know…there are a lot of DIYers out there who believe they can tackle a home remodel or renovation on their own. Typically, the main reason behind that is to cut costs.
Trust me, I get it. Home design projects are an investment. But this is not the thing to cut corners on or take any chances. You don’t just “wing” a project like this. Often times when people do that just to save money, it turns into a nightmare that ultimately ends up costing them more money! There’s way too much involved in these projects from planning, selecting materials and furnishings, installation and managing the entire project from start to finish. There are a lot of details that cannot be overlooked! How many of us have that kind of time when we’re working, running businesses, building empires, all while taking care of our families?
That’s why it’s so important to hire the right professionals to help you. We do this for a living every day! We’re not winging it. We’re not trying to figure out how this all works. We’re not just guessing and praying you get the results you want. While we’re not perfect, we do have proven systems and processes in place to manage your project appropriately and immersing ourselves in the details. Because the details absolutely matter!
You want to make sure you hire a professional interior designer that knows what they’re doing. They need to know this industry, be insured, have relationships with vendors and trades who do quality work, and they must have strong project management skills. Most homeowners don’t have these attributes or don’t have the time to take on something of this magnitude. It’s worth the investment to hire someone who does. Ask yourself…do you want it done right or do you just want it done? Just wanting it done will end up costing you a pretty penny.
Hiring a pro will save you money, time, and a whole lot of headaches because we are the ones taking care of everything from soup to nuts so you don’t have to. What is your peace of mind worth to you? Can you even really put a price on it?
The right professional general contractors must be scrutinized as well. After all, they are the ones who will be executing the work required in your project. From demolition to installation, they are the ones getting their hands dirty by doing the labor to execute and fulfill the approved design plan. Licensed and insured contractors will be responsible for getting any required permits for your project. They will let you know if something can’t be done due to structural issues and with the help of the designer, provide solutions to those problems.
It is paramount that homeowners include the cost of hiring a professional interior designer and general contractor when they’re determining their level of investment. If you want it done right, then you need to be willing to pay for that level of service and workmanship. Do your homework and interview at least three designers and contractors. You need to have a few proposals that you can compare so that you have an idea of what the true costs will be. If you have nothing to compare them to, how will you be able to make an informed decision on such a large investment?
Make sure you visit their websites and check out their work. Do you like their aesthetic? Do they have really good reviews? Don’t be afraid to ask for references and reach out to previous clients to see how their experience was working with that designer or contractor. I can’t tell you how crucial this is! Take the time out of your busy day to dig deep and do your research. It will be well worth it.
Listen. Home design projects are no joke. It’s a lot of work and even if you think you can attempt to do this, I would recommend that you err on the side of caution with this one. Don’t risk it.
Just because I can bake some amazing chocolate chip cookies for my kids, doesn’t make me an award-winning professional baker. And just because my best friend tells me she can do my hair because she watched a few YouTube videos, I’m most certainly not letting her touch my hair. I will still love her but then go straight to a professional hairstylist…unapologetically. No offense, but I want it done right and I’m willing to pay for that.
People are professionals at their craft for a reason. Don’t mimic something you see on Pinterest. What may look good in someone else’s home, may not look good in yours. They have a different layout, lighting, architectural details and other factors that vary greatly than what you have in your home. Do something unique. Be different. Let the professionals create something special that displays your personality and your taste…not just copy what someone else has already done. A 12-year old kid can do that.
Bottom line. Hire the professional interior designer and contractor to help you achieve your dream house goals. Don’t enlist the help of Uncle Jimmy or Cousin Bobby to do your electrical work or paint job. They may have good intentions but could also cause a lot of issues with your home – seen and unseen. Yikes. Do you really want to risk it just to save money? Our clients hire us because they want their project done right and they expect high quality work to be done. That comes at a price and you truly get what you pay for.
