Myth Buster: I have AI Now, I Don’t Need an Interior Designer

Artificial intelligence in interior design

Let me go ahead and bust this myth right now! Artificial Intelligence (AI) is all the rage today. The desire for such technological advancement has grown exponentially. So much so, that to be completely honest, it’s actually a little scary. Do we really want this type of “intelligence” running every aspect of our lives...possibly even taking over just so we can have the luxury of convenience?! Listen. I love the Matrix movies and Will Smith’s I Robot, but I don’t need (or want) them to become our reality. Yikes.

AI has made significant strides in various industries, including interior design; however, as advanced as AI may be, it can’t replace the value and expertise that a professional interior designer brings to a project. Let’s talk about some of the benefits of hiring a real human being over using AI.

1.   Personalized Approach

While AI algorithms can analyze a lot of data and provide design recommendations, they can’t personalize the design process as well as an interior designer can. As interior designers, we take the time to actually understand our clients' tastes, preferences, desires, and lifestyles, ensuring that the design reflects their unique personalities and needs. We actively listen to our clients' goals and translate them into beautiful, functional spaces that meet their specific requirements.

2.   Creativity and Vision

AI can generate design ideas and recommendations, but it lacks the human creativity and vision necessary to create truly unique and beautiful designs that are cohesive throughout the home. Interior designers have a wealth of knowledge and experience in design principles, color theory, and space planning that allows them to envision possibilities that AI cannot. We also have the ability to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions to design challenges.

3.   Industry Knowledge

Interior designers are experts in our field and have a thorough understanding of the latest design trends, materials, and technology. We help clients make informed decisions regarding the best materials and finishes for their space, ensuring that the design is both stylish and functional. Designers also have established relationships with vendors and contractors (sorry AI, but you don’t know anything about actually having real human relationships that deal with human emotion), making it easier for us to source materials and coordinate with other industry professionals on the project.

4.   Project Management

Interior designers not only conceptualize and design a space, but we also oversee the project from start to finish. We are proficient in managing timelines, levels of investment, and all the various contractors involved in the project, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and on schedule. AI cannot provide the level of project management and oversight that a professional interior designer can. Can you say site visits?

5.   Value for Money

Hiring an interior designer is an investment in your home or business. While there is an upfront cost associated with hiring a designer, our expertise can often save clients money in the long run. Designers can help clients avoid costly mistakes by selecting the right materials and finishes, ensuring that the project stays within the clients’ level of investment, and increasing the overall value of the property.

While AI has undoubtedly made huge strides in interior design, it simply can’t replace the expertise and personal touch that an interior designer brings to a project. I’m a real human being making real life decisions that will work best for your home and your needs. We’re living in a world that values what is fake (think of the Kardashians). It seems that few people truly want what is real. We want ease, comfort, no struggle, and no offense. That’s not even realistic.

The desire for the human element is fading away. Don’t think so? Just look around – self-checkout in stores, automated systems (it takes 30 minutes just to get through all the prompts  in order to speak to a real person on the phone), and even robotic arms handing you your Happy Meal at some of the McDonald’s restaurants. It’s quite disturbing.

Hey, I’m all for advancements in technology y’all, but there’s still a line we need to make sure we don’t cross. Let’s not eradicate the very beings we are in exchange for ease and convenience (which are temporary anyway). AI can be a beneficial tool for initial ideas and concepts; however, when it’s time for your next remodel or major home design project, consider hiring a professional interior designer.

Remember, AI doesn’t care that you have a child with special needs or an aging parent who is battling a severe medical condition. Interior designers are real people with real-life, thoughtful solutions for you and your family’s specific needs and desires. Don’t be the one who says, “I have AI now, I don’t need an interior designer”. Please don’t be deceived!

So, let me ask you friend…real or artificial? Which one do you value?
